A long-awaited addition to the French Broad River

Surfers and kayakers have a new place to test their skills in Woodfin, where Taylor’s Wave opened for public use in October 2026 after years of planning and delays associated with Tropical Storm Helene.

The approximately $4.8 million engineered feature creates a standing wave on the French Broad River near Riverside Park, allowing appropriately equipped and experienced paddlers to ride in place rather than follow the river downstream.

The Town of Woodfin has lifted its stay-out-of-water advisory for the construction area and reported that the in-river work was complete. A grand-opening celebration was scheduled for October 23.

A destination with a larger vision

Taylor’s Wave is part of Woodfin’s wider Greenway and Blueway initiative, which aims to improve recreational opportunities and connections along the French Broad River.

Supporters hope the project will attract river-sports enthusiasts and encourage visitors to explore nearby Woodfin businesses, but the impact on tourism and spending will emerge over time.

The wave is open before the entire surrounding project is finished. Riverside Park expansion work continues, and amenities planned for the completed park should not be assumed to be available today.

Know before you go

Temporary wave closures may occur as crews make performance adjustments, and construction can change shore access, parking, viewing routes and nearby amenities.

Riverside Park is at 1630 Riverside Drive in Woodfin. Visitors should follow posted detours, respect construction areas and confirm public access with the Town of Woodfin before traveling.

The wave is not automatically suitable for beginners. Current flow, water quality, river hazards and individual experience matter; paddlers should check conditions and use appropriate safety equipment.

Those who simply want to watch should confirm where spectators may safely stand, since viewing areas and accessible routes are still being completed.

More than a single opening day

Taylor’s Wave adds a distinctive new attraction to the region’s outdoor recreation landscape, while its phased opening is a reminder that Helene recovery and infrastructure work are still in progress.

For local residents and visitors alike, the best approach is to celebrate the milestone while treating the river and unfinished park surroundings with care.
