Free Medicare Workshop in Asheville Set for October 30 |
Council on Aging and SHIIP offer unbiased enrollment guidance at UNC Asheville |

Free local guidance before important Medicare decisions
Asheville-area residents approaching Medicare eligibility, family caregivers and others helping older adults navigate health insurance have an opportunity to learn the basics at a free workshop Friday, October 30, 2026.
The Council on Aging of Buncombe County, working with the North Carolina Department of Insurance's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), will host Introduction to Medicare – Understanding the Puzzle.
The session is scheduled for 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the OLLI Lifelong Learning Center at UNC Asheville, 300 Campus View Drive.
What participants will learn
The class will explain how Medicare works, the enrollment process, ways to avoid penalties and potential opportunities to save money.
Organizers say the presentation offers unbiased information and that no insurance products will be sold, recommended or endorsed.
The workshop is designed for people who are new to Medicare, caregivers and anyone assisting older relatives or neighbors with coverage decisions.
Registration and parking
The class is free, but attendees should register in advance through the Council on Aging of Buncombe County's official event listing.
Organizers say a link to request a free parking pass will be emailed the day before the class. Attendees without internet access should arrive early to arrange a parking pass at the front desk.
Because event details and available seats can change, confirm registration and arrival instructions before traveling.
Why this matters
Medicare choices can involve unfamiliar terms, enrollment windows and possible penalties. A local educational session may help participants prepare questions and better understand their options.
The October 30 workshop provides timely, practical information without requiring attendees to meet with an insurance salesperson. |
