Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways older adults can protect their health during the summer, especially when warm temperatures, outdoor errands, and certain medications make dehydration more likely.

As people age, the body's natural thirst signals can become less noticeable. That means an older adult may already be mildly dehydrated before feeling thirsty. Medications for blood pressure, heart conditions, allergies, and fluid retention can also affect hydration or make the body more sensitive to heat.

Early warning signs of dehydration may include dizziness, dry mouth, headache, weakness, dark-colored urine, confusion, or unusual fatigue. These symptoms should be taken seriously, especially during hot weather or after time spent outdoors.

Small habits can make a big difference. Keeping a water bottle nearby, drinking a glass of water before leaving the house, adding lemon or fruit for flavor, and eating water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and soups can all help.

Coffee, sweet tea, soda, and alcohol should not be treated as full replacements for water. They may be enjoyable in moderation, but plain water remains one of the best choices for everyday hydration.

Family members and neighbors can also help by checking in on older adults during hot stretches and making sure they have easy access to water and a cool place to rest.

Hydration does not need to be complicated. A few steady sips throughout the day can help support energy, balance, mental clarity, and overall well-being all summer long.
