Medicare Changes for 2027: What Western NC Seniors Should Review Before December 7 |
New drug-cost limits, shifting plan availability and possible benefit changes make individual plan notices especially important |

Medicare's 2027 coverage year brings changes that could affect what older adults pay for prescriptions, which plans are available and which doctors participate in their coverage.
Unlike a general open-enrollment reminder, the key question this fall is whether a beneficiary's current plan will still meet their needs next year.
What changes in prescription-drug coverage?
For 2027, the Medicare Part D annual out-of-pocket spending cap for covered drugs rises to $2,400, compared with $2,100 in 2026. The standard Part D deductible also increases, from $615 to $700, although individual plans may structure their benefits differently.
Negotiated Medicare prices are scheduled to apply to additional selected high-cost drugs in 2027. The effect on a particular person's costs depends on which medications they use, the plan and other coverage details.
Beneficiaries should look beyond premiums and compare the yearly total of premiums, deductibles, copayments and drug expenses at their preferred pharmacy.
What if a Medicare Advantage plan is changing or leaving?
Some insurers are reducing benefits or withdrawing plans from certain service areas for 2027. Not every Western North Carolina county or enrollee is affected, so readers should not assume their own plan is ending.
A notice from an insurer may describe changes in premiums, benefits, provider networks or the plan's availability. Anyone receiving a nonrenewal or termination notice should read the effective dates carefully and compare replacement options.
A familiar plan name does not guarantee that all doctors, hospitals or prescriptions will be covered in exactly the same way next year.
Which details deserve the closest look?
Start with the plan's Annual Notice of Change and current Summary of Benefits. Check whether your primary care physician, specialists, hospitals and pharmacies are in network.
For each prescription, check its formulary status, coverage restrictions and estimated cost. For Medicare Advantage, review maximum out-of-pocket exposure as well as extras such as dental, vision, hearing and transportation, which may change.
If you are considering switching between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, ask about how supplemental Medigap coverage works in your situation; protections and enrollment rules are not identical for everyone.
North Carolina officials recommend a review
On October 14, North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey warned that some Medicare plans have indicated substantial increases for 2027 and encouraged beneficiaries to compare choices rather than automatically renewing.
The annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7. Changes selected during this period generally begin January 1, 2027.
Where to get unbiased assistance
North Carolina's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program, known as SHIIP, provides free, impartial Medicare counseling. The state's Department of Insurance recommends contacting a local SHIIP counselor to review plan choices.
Beneficiaries can also compare options through the official Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov or call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
Avoid making decisions solely on advertising or a sales call. If a message claims a plan has ended, verify it through the insurer or an official Medicare resource.
The bottom line
For 2027, the most useful action is a careful comparison of actual costs, providers and drug coverage, particularly if a plan notice mentions changes or nonrenewal.
