MountainTrue Warns Helene River Cleanup Could Stop Without More Funding |
Crews say they have removed more than six million pounds of debris from Western North Carolina rivers, but funding is running short |

Western North Carolina's river cleanup effort faces an uncertain future as MountainTrue seeks renewed state funding for crews removing debris left by Hurricane Helene.
In an October 21 appeal, the Asheville-based environmental nonprofit said existing financial support is running out even though substantial work remains along mountain waterways.
More than six million pounds removed
MountainTrue reports hiring 100 local residents displaced by the storm and removing over six million pounds of debris from regional waterways.
The organization says hundreds of miles still need attention and warns that without additional General Assembly funding its cleanup operations and related jobs may end.
Why it matters beyond the rivers
Debris can make waterways dangerous for paddlers, affect habitat and undermine the outdoor recreation businesses that rely on clean, accessible rivers.
MountainTrue describes river restoration as part of Western North Carolina's economic recovery as well as an environmental priority.
The nonprofit is asking businesses, chambers of commerce and community organizations to support a request for renewed investment.
What happens next
The appeal does not mean the state has already approved additional funding. Lawmakers would need to decide whether to provide it.
Residents and businesses can follow updates from MountainTrue and state officials about the program's funding and future work. |
