Ichiban Returns to East Asheville After Two-Year Closure |
A familiar Japanese steakhouse and sushi restaurant reopens in a larger space after Hurricane Helene |

One of Asheville's familiar Japanese restaurants has returned after a two-year absence. Ichiban Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar reopened in East Asheville in October 2026, following the destruction of its former Biltmore Village location during Hurricane Helene.
After a reservation-only soft opening beginning October 7, regular service was scheduled to begin October 12 at 130 Hospitality Way in East Asheville. The restaurant moved into a former Cracker Barrel building, giving the business a chance to start again with a renovated interior and more space.
A new location after a difficult departure
Ichiban's earlier restaurant on Hendersonville Road was severely damaged when the Swannanoa River flooded Biltmore Village in September 2024. Rather than immediately rebuilding at the former site, the owners faced a lengthy search and renovation process before reopening.
The Chen family established Ichiban in 2000. Its return reconnects longtime diners and employees with a business that has been part of the area's restaurant community for more than two decades.
More room for hibachi and sushi
The new location covers approximately 10,000 square feet, about 3,000 square feet more than the previous restaurant. It includes hibachi cooking tables and a sushi bar, along with expanded kitchen and dining areas. Restaurant representatives said the larger operation was expected to support additional hiring.
The restaurant's return is more than a change of address. It is one example of how Western North Carolina businesses are adapting after Helene, sometimes by moving to different neighborhoods and reimagining their operations rather than returning to the exact place they occupied before.
What diners should know
The soft-opening period required reservations, but the restaurant announced that regular service would start October 12 without a reservation requirement. Hours and availability can change, so customers should confirm current details before visiting.
For East Asheville, the reopening brings another dining option. For longtime Ichiban customers, it offers the opportunity to reconnect with a familiar restaurant in a new home.
