Fall color season is one of the signature pleasures of Western North Carolina. The changing leaves arrive at different times across the region, often giving residents several opportunities to enjoy the season.
Higher elevations generally show stronger color earlier, with the display progressing toward lower mountain valleys. Temperature, rainfall, wind and individual tree species can alter the timing from one place to another.
This year, road and trail conditions deserve extra attention. Recent heavy rain can affect slopes, creeks and unpaved roads, even when the weather appears clear again. Travelers should check National Park Service, Forest Service and state transportation updates before setting out.
A worthwhile outing does not have to involve a strenuous hike. Scenic town streets, lower-elevation parks and accessible overlooks can provide a rewarding autumn experience when conditions allow.
Instead of building an itinerary around several distant stops, choose one region and allow time to explore. Brevard, Waynesville, Hendersonville and communities along the Blue Ridge each offer a different autumn atmosphere.
Pack layers, carry drinking water and leave extra time on busy roads. Most importantly, never bypass a closure barrier to reach a scenic viewpoint. The best fall outing is one that leaves room to enjoy the journey safely. |
